The Institute renders services to the scientific community. Among others:
In vitro potato germplasm bank.
Nodal segments of plants grown in vitro are preserved in a culture medium with high sacarose level (80 g/L), low irradiation and temperature of 10 ºC. With this method, materials can be stored for periods of up to 30 months without the need for sub-cultures nor intermediate steps.
97 gene types are conserved in the bank, including commercial varieties (solanum tuberosum ssp. tuberosum), solanum tuberosum ssp. andigena, solanum demissum and a group of transgenic plants with various genetic modifications related to carbohydrate metabolism.
Most of this material is available for research purposes.
